I had a good stay at Hotel Garrett recently. Ive seen numerous complaints about location, lack of aircons and noise and none of these were issues for me. My room was clean, comfortable and I did have an aircon. The location is not that bad - yes there are some homeless in the overall area but it was fine around the hotel and the 24*7 security is reassuring. The breakfast were a nice perk and the staff are brilliant. Its a good value place to stay and the rooms are well kept, clean and comfortable which is really what its about.

Pros:
Recently remodeled — both the building interior and rooms are very clean and modern.
Great central location, close to most major attractions.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Breakfast bread was surprisingly good.
Cons:
The room is very small, barely enough space to open a suitcase.
Budget rooms seem to be located toward the middle section of the building, facing another wall just about 1.5 meters away. With no natural light and poor lighting, the room stays dark all day
No microwave or electric kettle in the room.
Parking is very limited. If there’s no spot available at check-in, you’ll need to quickly find a nearby lot — most were already full.
Just two blocks away, there’s an area with homeless and drug-addicted people.
During my 4-day stay, this was clearly the most unsafe neighborhood in San Francisco. I once walked around and immediately felt unsafe — not recommended for walking.
Overall:
The room condition and facilities are good for the price, and rooms with an exterior-facing window look excellent. Friendly staffs are big plus.
However, the area becomes very unsafe just two blocks away, so I would only recommend this hotel for travelers with a car.
