The Worst Hotel Experience I Have Ever Had
This is without question the worst hotel experience I have ever encountered. If a 0-star rating were possible, I would choose it without hesitation.
I paid in full for a specific room because of its facilities, including a large double bed, a bathtub, and adequate lighting suitable for working. Upon arrival, I was told I had been “upgraded.” However, this so-called upgrade was clearly inferior to the room I originally booked besides the size:
No bathtub
Very dark lighting, completely unsuitable for work
I never requested an upgrade. I stayed at this hotel only because of the original room facilities. Calling a downgrade an “upgrade” is unacceptable and misleading.
When I questioned this, the staff claimed the hotel was full and that no other rooms were available, despite the fact that I had already paid. This explanation was unreasonable and unprofessional. After persistent discussion, they suddenly “found” another room. Unfortunately, this room was dirty, poorly maintained, with visible renovation debris, and shockingly, no bathrobe.
When I requested a bathrobe, I was told the hotel never provides bathrobes—a statement that was clearly false, as I personally saw bathrobes in the so-called upgrade room earlier. This was a direct contradiction and shows a lack of honesty.
The service issues continued the next day. My colleague was unwell and unable to go to breakfast, so I politely asked to pack some food to bring back. The restaurant manager claimed the hotel does not have takeaway boxes, and that I could only take bread in a paper bag. This is completely unacceptable for any hotel, let alone one that claims to offer proper hospitality. Another staff member later confirmed that the manager simply refused to provide boxes, not that they didn’t exist.
This hotel shows:
Poor management
Dishonest communication
Extremely low service standards
No respect for paying guests
I have traveled to Thailand many times and have always experienced excellent hospitality. This hotel is a complete exception and leaves a very negative impression on Thai tourism. If this is the standard being tolerated, it will seriously damage trust from international travelers.
I strongly advise future guests to avoid this hotel entirely. There are many wonderful hotels in Thailand—this is not one of them.

We had booked a room with a mountain view for two nights, with special requests for a high floor, a large bed, and a quiet room. However, upon arrival, we were checked into Room 1226, which had no mountain view at all. We immediately contacted reception to clarify this, and were told that mountain-view rooms only come with two separated single beds, and that we needed to come down to the counter to change the room and to bring down all our luggages.
When we went to the reception, we were attended to by the staff member who claimed to be the manager on duty. Unfortunately, she refused to provide her name and neither was she wearing a name tag. Throughout the conversation, her manner was harsh and confrontational. Instead of assisting us, she repeatedly insisted on “checking our booking,” and even told us that the hotel “does not have any mountain view but only city view rooms,” which left us extremely confused and shocked.
We calmly showed her our booking details, clearly indicating a mountain-view room. Instead of acknowledging the discrepancy, she raised her voice at us, tapped her chest aggressively, and insisted that we were at fault for booking such a room. She also demanded that we “respect her,” even though we had remained respectful throughout. Her tone, facial expressions, and overall demeanour were rude and unprofessional. When we requested her name for reference, she refused, claiming we had “no right” to ask—something that no reputable hotel staff should ever say to a guest.
After nearly 30 minutes of waiting, we were suddenly assigned exactly what we had originally booked: a mountain-view room, on a high floor (12th), with a large bed, and in a quiet corner. This directly contradicted her earlier claims that such a configuration was not possible. This entire experience left us confused, disappointed, and frankly frustrated.
This was our first trip to Chiang Mai, and it is extremely disheartening that our experience with Duangtawan Hotel began in such an unpleasant way. We did not expect to be treated with such disrespect and dishonesty by your staff—especially someone who claimed to be the manager on duty. This was our third day in Chiang Mai, and prior to this hotel stay we were at U Nimman hotel on 7th and 8th December and the professionalism was of huge contrast.
Near Night market and Big C but the hotel is too old and it smells
